QUARTET – Reviewed by Noah

Dustin Hoffman, long acclaimed for his career as an actor, has made the jump to directing.

At 75 years young, Ratzo Rizzo himself stepped behind the camera to bring the story of retired musicians to the screen.

I was confused at first, because Hoffman isn’t British, and when I imagine his singing voice, I think of Tootsie, and cry a tiny bit.

Nonetheless, here he is, presenting a British film about British musicians, let’s see how he does.

Quartet focuses on four residents of a retirement home for musicians. Billy Connolly, Tom Courtenay, Maggie Smith and Pauline Collins were a lauded quartet a time ago. Over the years, while Connoly, Courtenay, and Collins remained close, Maggie Smith broke away from the group and forged her own career. Now that she is moving into the same home as the other three, things are going to get more complicated, especially given the relationship she was in with Courtenay. Can the group look past their differences in time to perform at the annual concert? You’ll have to tune in to find out.

Quartet is a sweet and charming comedy with a lot of heart. Phenomenal performances all around, especially from Connolly as the late-in-life lothario, and Collins, who portrays dementia with enough whimsy for it to be bittersweet.

Long story short, if you like The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, British people in general, movies where people sing, movies where people act, or Meet the Fockers, then you should probably check out Quartet.

Short story shorter, it’s good. Get it. – [DVD] [Blu-Ray]
